Behind every successful nursing student at the University of New England is someone guiding them along the way, someone like Sarah Hutchins. A Senior Professional Academic and Career Advisor and UNE graduate, Hutchins works closely with nursing students as they navigate one of the most demanding academic paths.

Hutchins’ journey from student to advisor gives her a unique perspective when supporting her students. With a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community certification, she understands the academic and personal challenges students face. “I had not had a strong relationship with the nursing department, but was really excited to work with the students as I seemed to have a lot in common with them… I have made incredible connections and relationships with students that will hopefully last well beyond their time here at UNE!” said Hutchins.

Nursing students face intense workloads and high expectations throughout their years at UNE. Hutchins helps them manage these pressures by offering guidance, structure, and most importantly, encouragement during the most difficult moments of the semester.

“Sarah is a thoughtful, student-centered advisor who balances empathy with accountability, helping students navigate challenges while keeping them focused on their goals. Sharing her unique path to illustrate that everyone finds their way in different fashions,” said Jeff Conant, a colleague of Hutchins who works in the Academic and Career Advising Office.

For Hutchins, the most rewarding part of her role is watching students grow and succeed. Whether overcoming obstacles or reaching milestones, these moments reinforce her passion for advising. Throughout the week, students seek her out for guidance or simply someone to talk to, and she makes it clear she is always available to support them. “The things that make it worthwhile are the conversations I have about nothing. When students come by to tell me something about their day, their break, their family, their classes… when students think of me as someone they trust,” said Hutchins.

Through her work, Hutchins continues to play a quiet but essential role in shaping the next generation of nurses. “I have never had someone so invested in my education, nor as enthusiastic about my future. Sarah’s encouragement and constant verbalized belief in me has helped me to further believe in myself, and pushed me to work harder as a student and develop a greater passion for nursing,” said Estelle Cox, Nursing, Class of 2028.

While it isn’t what you always aim for, it is okay to accept a C once in a while! Another one would be that one ‘failure’ is fixable! There is always at least one second chance!”

Her dedication extends beyond scheduled appointments, as she often checks in with students who may be struggling or feeling overwhelmed. “I want them to feel heard. I often share my own struggles in my academic journey… I want them to know that they are not alone, but are understood,” she said. This consistent support helps build trust and fosters a sense of community among nursing students.

“Sarah works to ensure that her office is a place where all of her advisees feel welcome to drop in at any time. There have been numerous times I have walked into her office simply in need of a pep talk or real-life advice, and every time Sarah has welcomed me with open arms and been the strong support I needed,” said Cox.

Her guidance helps students not only reach graduation but also enter the workforce with confidence and compassion. “I want my students to know that they have someone in their corner for life and that they can do hard things no matter their challenges,” Hutchins reflects. “At the end of the day, I want to help students see they are worth it and CAN do it.”

“Scrubs, Schedules, and Support: Sarah Hutchins’ Journey in Nursing Advising”

By: Mackenzie Schors

At the heart of UNE’s nursing program, Hutchins is part planner, part mentor, and part lifeline for students navigating one of the most demanding paths on campus

Students say Hutchins’ impact goes far beyond advising. “Feeling connected is something that we all at some point have been looking for here at UNE. Sarah, in my short two years, has shaped my nursing experience far beyond expectations when it comes to creating connections and preparing me for my future,” said Jordan Peterson, Nursing, Class of 2028.

Workshop Experience | 300-400 Words

Mackenzie Schors

My workshop experience was overall very encouraging and helpful in identifying both the strengths of my article and areas that could be improved. One of the most valuable aspects of the feedback I received was how positively Grace responded to my title and overall structure. She noted that my title was engaging and that my introduction did a strong job of quickly establishing the subject of the article. However, she also suggested that my opening sentence could be more compelling to better hook the reader from the very beginning. This is something I agree with, and I plan to revise my first sentence to make it more attention-grabbing while still maintaining the tone of the piece.

Another strength highlighted in the workshop was my use of credibility, particularly in how I introduced Hutchins early in the article. Grace pointed out that including her background and immediately incorporating her voice helped establish trust with the reader. I was glad to hear this, as building credibility was something I focused on while writing. Additionally, she appreciated the balance between quotes and informational content, which reassured me that the article feels engaging rather than overly dense.

The feedback also emphasized the effectiveness of including multiple perspectives, specifically the quote from Conant. Grace noted that this added depth to the article and reinforced Hutchins’ character as both personable and student-focused. This confirmed for me that including a range of voices strengthens the overall impact of the piece.

One area for improvement that stood out was the need for smoother transitions between paragraphs. Grace mentioned that some sections felt like abrupt shifts in topic. Moving forward, I plan to work on creating clearer connections between ideas so that the article flows more naturally from one point to the next.

Overall, this workshop helped me see my writing from a reader’s perspective. It gave me confidence in what is working well while also providing clear, manageable steps for revision.

Profile Reflection | 300-400 Words

Writing this profile story pushed me to grow in several areas as a writer, editor, and peer-reviewer. At the beginning of the project, my main focus was telling Sarah Hutchins’ story clearly and accurately while staying true to the tone I felt best represented her role and impact. Throughout the drafting process, I received feedback suggesting changes to my lead, but I ultimately chose to keep it as it was because I felt it aligned with the message I wanted to convey. This experience helped me learn the importance of evaluating feedback thoughtfully and making intentional decisions as a writer rather than changing something just for the sake of revision.

As a writer, one of my biggest challenges was organizing the large amount of information and quotes I gathered. I wanted to include as many perspectives as possible because each student and colleague quote added something valuable, but I had to learn how to be selective and intentional. This meant focusing on the most impactful quotes and arranging them in a way that supported a clear flow. I also worked on improving sentence variety and avoiding repetition, which helped make the story feel more polished and professional.

In my role as an editor, I spent time refining clarity, grammar, and structure. I paid close attention to how each paragraph connected to the next, making sure the story moved smoothly from Hutchins’ background to her impact on students. Small edits, like tightening sentences or rewording awkward phrasing, made a big difference in the overall readability. I also learned the importance of reading my work out loud, which helped me catch areas that felt abrupt or unclear.

As a peer-reviewer, I gained a new appreciation for constructive feedback. Reading my classmates’ work helped me see different writing styles and approaches, and it also made me more aware of my own strengths and weaknesses. Giving feedback required me to be thoughtful and specific, focusing on both what worked well and what could be improved.

Overall, this project strengthened my confidence as a writer and showed me the value of revision and collaboration. It taught me that strong writing is not just about the first draft, but about the process of refining and improving along the way, while still maintaining your own voice and perspective as a writer.
